Ban on beaches to protect turtles in Turkey

04.08.2023

In order to protect endangered sea turtles and ensure safety for young turtles on their way to the sea, Turkey has decided to ban visits to some beaches in the Demirtas and Gazipasa areas from sunset to sunrise.
The green sea turtle (chelonia mydas) and the sea turtle (caretta-caretta) are species listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). They actively nest in the Mediterranean basin, especially in Turkey.
In order to ensure the effective implementation of the ban, law enforcement agencies have sent circulars prohibiting bathing, the installation of tents, bonfires and entry for both people and vehicles on these beaches from 20:30 to 05:30 in the morning.
These restrictions apply to 25 beaches in the districts of Mugla, Antalya, Mersin, Adana and Hatai, and will be in effect until September 30. This measure is aimed at protecting vulnerable species and preserving their numbers in the coastal areas of Turkey.
